After Virginia state GOP treasurer Bob FitzSimmonds made a controversial Facebook post, members of his party are calling for his resignation. According to The Washington Post, FitzSimmonds made a remark on the social media site that questioned if Muslim-Americans had made positive contributions to U.S. society.
Both the chairman and vice chairman of the Virginia state Republicans, Pat Mullins and Michael E. Thomas issued statements that spoke out against the post. The party leaders both expressed that they felt FitzSimmonds should step down in separate statements. The Republican candidate succeeding U.S. Rep. Jim Moran said that FitzSimmonds “should be fired…for his insulting comments about Muslims.”
It was originally reported that FitzSimmonds spoke with Mullins and had offered a resignation at that time. However, FitzSimmonds has not responded to the Post’s questions for a comment on the situation, but her later denied that he made a resignation offer to a conservative blogger as well as on Facebook.
