The latest campaign finance information shows that Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark R. Warner increased his financial lead by bringing in $2.7 million compared to Republican challenger Ed Gillespie’s $1.9 million, reports The Washington Post.
The former governor raised the $2.7 million between May 22 and June 30, bringing his total funds raised to $14 million. Gillespie, a GOP strategist, saw his total funds raise to $4 million, putting him far behind.
“Grass-roots support from folks across the Commonwealth has allowed us to make early [advertising] investments that will pay dividends in the fall,” said Warner’s campaign manager Trey Nix.
Gillespie’s campaign emphasized that they received donations from almost every area of Virginia and that they have received donations from people who, at one time, were donating their money to Warner’s campaign.
“The Gillespie campaign continues to build momentum as more and more voters compare Mark Warner’s record of voting 97 percent of the time with President Obama and Ed Gillespie’s agenda for economic growth,” said Gillespie’s campaign manager Chris Leavitt.
