Proposed Changes for Mental Health Care in Virginia

After Senator Creigh Deeds’ son “Gus” stabbed his father and then killed himself on Nov. 19th, mental health officials in Virginia think it would be best to change the protocols for mental health patients, Newsplex reported. The changes in January will require hospitals to have beds available for people who are danger to themselves and society and will give the facilities “clear and specific expectations for contacting private hospitals.”

Gus was released from the hospital’s custody just one day before the incident with his father. If the hospitals had these proposed protocols in advance, things may have been different. It was a tragic event that the state definitely learned from and hopefully this can prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
