Wednesday, Virginia’s inspector general began an investigation into the release of Austin Deeds from psychiatric care one day before apparently attacking his father and fatally shooting himself.
Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has also directed top health officials to conduct a review of state and local mental-health services following the incident.
Austin Deeds, 24, had a psychiatric evaluation on Monday, but was not admitted to a hospital. At the time, officials said the reason he was not admitted was an unavailability of beds. However, since the incident, multiple hospitals have confirmed that they had space available but were never contacted.
