With the voter registration deadline of October 15th fast approaching, approximately 57,000 Virginian voters are at risk of having their voter registration cancelled because they are flagged as being registered voters in another state, according to Think Progress. Those affected are not being given advanced notice and a chance to prevent being purged; they will only receive a letter informing them that they have been cancelled. These voters will then have to re-register if they want to take part in the November 5th election.
According to Think Progress, based off of 2009 voter turnout numbers, the 57,000 represent about 3% of Virginian voters. The gubernatorial race between
Ken Cuccinnelli (R) and Terry McAuliffe (D) is already a tight one with no clear lead. This purge could sway the race in either direction. Read the whole article from Think Progress here.
